Too big to Hide- District Energy & CHP infrastructure in sensitive campus locations

Perceived as blocky, dirty, noisy “machines” on the peripheries of cities and campuses, infrastructure facilities are TOO BIG to hide. Infrastructure is LARGE in scale but LARGER in impact, and provides us with the basics of electricity, water, heating, and cooling. Conversation about its electrifying potential—both functionally and aesthetically—is now starting to escalate. Early on we decided to view these structures as complex and exciting architecture that can help define urban contexts and shape environment. Determined to literally think out of the “mystery box”, we created three design mantras…think (not build) big, think sustainable, and think playful.
