Plan, supervise and direct the plant personnel to achieve safe, reliable, and efficient operation of heating and cooling and electric production facilities.  Identify and implement procedures and processes to ensure operational consistency and good operating practices.  With the assistance of the Plant Superintendent and Maintenance Supervisor, supervise operations personnel and maintenance department and implement provisions of collective bargaining agreement.  Oversee development and implement training (OJT, cross-functional, etc.) for production staff to ensure operational consistency and good operating practices and professional development of staff.  Responsible for all aspects of plant operations and maintenance at District Energy and District Cooling production facilities, St. Paul Cogeneration, and Energy Park.  Develop the production staff to meet objectives for safety, environmental compliance, reliability, efficiency, labor relations and control of operating expenses.


Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in a technical field (mechanical or electrical engineering desirable) with strong technical training in boiler, power production, and chiller operations and related areas plus supervisory training.  State of Minnesota Chief A Engineer's License is desired.


Demonstrated understanding of steam plant engineering and managerial experience in the operation of solid fuel-fired boilers and chillers and related equipment. A minimum of five (5) years' experience in supervision of boiler/chiller/generating plant operations as well as experience with managing employees in a bargaining unit. Project management experience desired.

California Institute of Technology

Location: Pasadena Ca. - Maintenance Mechanic 16647SP

Job Duties:

  • Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, repair and overhaul steam turbine generators, combustion turbine generators, high pressure steam boilers, pumps, heat exchangers, compressors, water purification equipment, and related distribution systems in the Central and Satellite plants and tunnels. Legibly record temperatures, pressures, and other parameters on log sheets.
  • Perform corrective and preventative maintenance on machinery/equipment using the plant's computerized maintenance management system.
  • Qualify as Water Lab Technician, collect and analyze water samples from boilers, closed loop heating systems, cooling systems/towers and swimming pools. Chemically treat systems as required. Perform boiler bottom blow downs; make adjustments to boiler surface blow down and chemical injection.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, backwash, regenerate sand/charcoal filters, water softeners, reverse osmosis units, demineralizers, and ultraviolet sterilizers.
  • Assemble/install pipe and fittings for various systems, to include layout, pipefitting, threading, soldering, and gluing.
  • Perform routine inspection tours
  • Assist retrofitting/new installation of equipment
  • Clean and perform other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5- years' experience repairing/maintaining utility plant equipment, gas turbines and rotating machinery.
  • Must have or ability to obtain within 12-months a valid City-of-Los-Angeles Unlimited Steam Engineer license with Turbine Endorsement and maintain throughout course of employment.
  • Must qualify as Utility Plant Operator/Senior Utility Plant Operator for relief shifts.
  • Possess and maintain a valid California-Driver's license throughout the course of employment.
  • Must be able to lift up to 80-pounds, bend in all direction
  • Must be able to work all shifts as assigned. Some overtime is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2-years' experience in co-generation/combined cycle power plant operations and maintenance.
  • 1- year experience in water chemistry, testing water softeners and boilers.
  • Possess valid City-of-Los-Angeles Unlimited Steam Engineer license with Turbine Endorsement.

Under general supervision of the Facilities Performance Operations Manager, the Facilities Performance Specialist is a key contributor to the University effort to improve occupant comfort and reduce energy use at all campus buildings.  The Specialist is responsible for installing, programming, calibrating and commissioning Utility Meters and Data Acquisition Systems that measure campus energy.  The Specialist maintains the equipment and calibration archive of these systems in the campus FMS while working closely with the Manager and various campus groups to establish and maintain connectivity of multiple data acquisition systems to the Utility Billing System and the campus energy dashboard.  The Specialist also commissions, retunes, Test Adjust and Balances and installs HVAC, Lighting and Building Automation equipment to improve building performance as well as documents the correct performance of these activities when performed by others.  

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience required. Six (6) years of progressively responsible experience with HVAC, lighting, controls, metering and flow computers; ten (10) years without a Bachelor's. Minimum two (2) years of experience with Building Automation Systems.

North Carolina State University

This position will provide supervision, leadership and guidance to the utilities distribution shop for the operations and maintenance of the underground utility systems on the NCSU campuses. University of Florida

The University of Florida is seeking an energetic, dynamic, and technical leader for the University's Main Campus Utility Operations Departments in Gainesville, Florida.  The Utility Operations Department is comprised of over 60 employees and serve the following utilities to 22M GSFT of buildings:

  • Electrical Systems: Operation of all electrical distribution and transmission infrastructure from the point of utility company delivery to campus buildings. Systems include medium voltage (5KV, 15KV, and 23KV) cable, substations, transformers, and switchgear in both overhead and underground distribution.
  • Chilled Water Production and Distribution: Operation of district network of 9 chiller plants (42000 Tons) serving the campus wide distribution system.
  • Steam Production and Distribution: Operation of central boiler plant (220,000 Lb/hr) and all steam distribution infrastructure
  • Water Distribution: Operation of all water distribution infrastructure from the point of utility company delivery to campus buildings.
  • Waste Water Treatment: Operations of the 3MGD water reclamation facility serving the campus wide collection system. In addition to the plant, the roles is responsible the sewer lift stations and storm water system network.
