Largest Ever College/University Conference HeldThe 9th Annual College/University Conference, which was hosted last month by Stanford University, was the largest ever with 160 people in attendance. The conference took place at the Hyatt Rickeys Hotel, February 21-23, 1996. This was the first conference of its kind to have exhibitors display. We would like to thank the following exhibitors for participating in the conference:
The conference was a success because of the work of the conference committee. The following people were a part of this committee, from Stanford University: Marion King, Bob Hockey, Robert Reid and Steve Briscombe, and from Cornell University, the technical chairman, Rob McCabe. We would also like to thank Joel Greene of Ball Janik, Ray DuBose of UNC-Chapel Hill and Steve Little of Cornell University for their help with the program. Casten Held Meeting With RepresentativesOn February 13, 1996, Thomas R. Casten, president and CEO of Trigen Energy Corporation, an IDEA member and past president, hosted Representative Dan Schaefer (R-CO), Chairman of the House Commerce, Energy and Power Subcommittee and Paul Schauer of the Colorado House of Representatives for a briefing on how more steam can be received from electric generation. Casten took to opportunity to inform the Representatives of how removal of regulatory barriers to competition would encourage electric generators to recover more heat, and that district energy providers have the technology to move that otherwise wasted heat to benefit the consumer and the environment.State Representative Schauer, who is sponsoring retail wheeling legislation in Colorado, left the session held at Coors Brewing Company in Golden, Colo., to convene hearings at the state capitol on his bill. During the hearings the Representative was able to use some of Casten's insights in his introductory remarks. Congressman Schaefer and his staff applauded Trigen's approach and asked him for specific proposals on some of the political issues in the electric restructuring debate. These issues include how fast it should occur, what role the states should play and how stranded costs and PURPA contracts should be addressed. Soon after this meeting, in a letter to the association dated, February 16, 1996, Congressman Schaefer announced that he helped to form the House Renewable Energy Caucus. He stated that due to the finite natural resources, "we must consider further investments in sage and sustainable energy technologies." "The purpose of our caucus is to be proactive in dissemination information on, and increasing congressional awareness of, renewable energy research and development." Congressman Schaefer wrote an opinion/editorial that explains the caucus and its goal of securing our energy future. For a copy of the editorial contact IDEA at (202) 429-5111. CER owns and operates the steam and chilled water utility serving downtown Cleveland.McCormick Place Wins AwardCongratulations to McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago, Ill., the winner of the Energy User News' 1995 "Efficient Building Award" for Thermal Energy Storage. McCormick Place was selected for this award from a highly competitive slate of nominees as best exemplifying the spirit of excellence and innovation in the use of energy efficient technologies and building management. The CBI Strata-Therm Chilled Water Storage System serves as the project's focal point.McCormick Place's district cooling system is run by IDEA member, Trigen-Peoples District Energy Corporation, a partnership between subsidiaries of Trigen Energy Corporation and Peoples Energy. Trigen installed and maintains an 8.5 million-gallon stratified chilled water storage facility that will save McCormick Place $1.2 million a year in power and operating costs.
