IDEA Releases "Report of 1995 Operations"

The annual statistical report of IDEA member utilities, college and universities has a new name and more information this year. The "Report of 1995 Operations" is one of the most specific surveys that the association has assembled in recent years. Work on this study began last spring. It is now complete and is the third annual study to show trends in the industry.

The report has been mailed to all of those who participated in the study. Copies are available to members at a cost of $150 each and to non-members for $350.

Thirty-four utilities and twenty-six colleges and universities participated in the survey. In the report you can find fuel use by type, annual energy send out by type, the distances the systems serve, the number of meters used by the system and the age of the plants.

To receive a copy of the report send a request with payment to Jeff Hayter, IDEA, 1200 19th Street, NW, Suite 300, Washington, DC 20036-2422 or fax credit card orders with credit card information including signature of card holder to (202) 429-5113.

IDEA Executive Director Gives Presentation at NASEO Meeting

John Fiegel, IDEA Executive Director, gave an overview of the United States district heating industry at a meeting sponsored by the National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO) on August 20, 1996 in Washington, D.C. The presentation was part of an eleven-day Polish-American School focusing on energy efficiency. Larry Bean, chairperson of NASEO, was the host.

Trigen Receives Award, IDEA Exhibits at AEE Show

Trigen Energy Corporation received the Competitive Power Company of the Year Award at the Association of Energy Engineers conference. Tom Casten, president of Trigen and past president of IDEA, accepted the award on behalf of the company.

Executive Director John Fiegel attended the conference to promote the industry on the trade show floor. Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) Competitive Power Congress and National Industrial Energy Expo in Somerset, New Jersey, August 14-15, 1996. Several attendees stopped to inquire about the association and Fiegel was pleased that many current members also said hello.

IDEA member Rob McCabe, Cornell University, presented a paper titled, "District Heating and Cooling Systems of the Future: Strategies for Global Change.

The AEE is an international organization dedicated to promoting the principles and practices of energy conservation and energy efficient system design.

Trigen Forms Western Region

In mid-July, six of Trigen's western operating companies were combined to create one Western Region with Stephen K. Swinson, IDEA President, named president of the region. Steve had previously served as president of Trigen-Kansas City and Trigen-Colorado.

The change brings together Trigen-Chicago, Trigen-Colorado, Trigen-Kansas City, Trigen-Oklahoma, Trigen-Tulsa and Trigen-St. Louis and redelpoys the skills of leaders from each operating company to support the region's expected growth.

Vic DeJong has been appointed vice president, operations, and will be responsible for all Western Region facilities as well as customer service and marketing for existing businesses. Mike ElDorado, newly appointed vice president, business technology, is responsible for engineering services in support of the region's developing activities. Charles Fishman, as vice president, business development, is responsible for the region's new business development activities. Continuing to lead development efforts in Chicago and Trigen's relationship with its partner, Peoples Energy, will be General Manager Louie Overstreet. Expanding his role in the regionalization of the accounting function will be Earl Charvet, vice president and controller.

In a related move, Steve Swinson announced staffing changes at Trigen-Kansas City. Jim Henslee has been named general manager of Trigen-Kansas City, continuing to be responsible for the operation of Trigen-Kansas City district energy system and adding the responsibilities of customer service and sales growth in Kansas City. Bob Berry, director of marketing and development, will now report to Mike ElDorado and will expand his work in the development group within the Western Region.
