IDEA Launches Member-Get-A-Member Campaign

In June 1993 the association had only 575 members when IDEA (IDHCA at the time) kicked off the first member-get-a-member campaign. At the beginning of February 1997, we initiated the second member-get-a-member campaign with a mailing to all members.

We are asking our members for their assistance in securing prospective members of IDEA. Members should send the names of those people who they purchase products from, consult for you, or deal with in any way in your district energy business. These are the people who will benefit from membership in IDEA.

Sponsor a new member and everyone wins! Here's how you can win: between August 1, 1996 and May 20, 1997, each time a member recruits a new member their name will be entered in the recruitment list. The more new members each member recruits, the greater their chances of winning. The grand prize is $500. Each member that recruits at least three new members, will receive a $100 discount certificate good toward registration for any IDEA conference.

Please contact IDEA immediately if you wish to participate in the campaign and need another copy of the brochure or have any questions.

We are still hoping to reach our goal set in 1993 of 2,000 members by the year 2,000!

ASHRAE Meeting Held in Philadelphia
ASHRAE's 1997 Winter Meeting was held January 26-29 in Philadelphia, Penn. During the meeting the Society offered tours of two area IDEA member facilities, Princeton University's Cogeneration Plant and University of Pennsylvania's MOD 6 Chilled Water Plant. A tour was also given to the Technical Committee 6.2 (District Heating and Cooling) of Trigen-Philadelphia Energy Corporation's district heating facility.
Opryland Saves $1 Million With Cogeneration

An article in the February 1997 issue of Engineering Systems states that Opryland USA is reducing energy costs approximately $1 million a year with its new cogeneration plant.

The Opryland Hotel is one of the largest in the world, with 1891 guest rooms, more than 65 meeting rooms, and four ballrooms. In the 1980s the vice president of maintenance and engineering at Opryland began working with the chairman of the board of I.C. Thomasson Associates, a Nashville engineering firm. The project was to develop an electrical and mechanical systems upgrade that would combine increased heating and cooling capacity, efficiency, and reduced utility savings.

Construction of the 288 by 88 feet brick plant began in 1993. The new cogeneration plant serves the current hotel and a new site that cover 4.5 acres. It houses the steam and chilled-water supply and power generation systems that supply heating steam, laundry steam, chiller water for cooling, and 5,000 kW of electricity for the hotel. "Opryland management said it expects to save nearly $1 million a year by generating electricity with natural gas."

On another note, we want to let you know a little bit about the hotel where the 88th Annual Conference and Trade Show will be held:

The Hotel Del Coronado is located on Coronado Peninsula across the bay from San Diego, Calif. Built in 1888, the Hotel Del is a fine blend of Victorian and modern-day convenience. The Del is generally considered to be the last of the extravagantly conceived sea-side resort hotels left in the world.

Thomas Edison personally supervised the installation of the original lighting system. The hotel's power plant generated energy for the entire city of Coronado until 1922. This plant will be included in the technical tour on Monday afternoon.

The Hotel Del Coronado was the Victorian model for the Emerald City in the Wizard of Oz. This grand hotel has played host to 14 U.S. presidents, as well as royalty, writers and film crews. In fact, the film Some Like It Hot which starred Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis was filmed at the Del.
