Technical Program Updates:

Sunday - 3:30-4:30 pm

Industry Leaders Panel on Business Development

Panelists include:
Leonard Devanna, President, Advanced Energy Systems
John Mitola, Vice President, Unicom Thermal Technologies
James Laurito, President, The Energy Network
Michael Carroll, President, NRG Thermal

Moderated by Robert Thornton, Chairman of IDEA

The panelists will discuss their experiences in acquisition of district energy facilities; pros/cons and lessons learned. They will talk about acquisition versus development. They will present their views on the district energy marketplace; deregulation; trends and how IDEA as an association can support growth of the industry.

Monday Plenary Session - 8:30-10:15 am

US EPA Energy Star Building Program/ IDEA Public Sector Leadership Award

This plenary session will be open to members of BOMA Boston and BOMA Greater Hartford in conjunction with the mission of the US EPA to promote the Energy Star Building Program across the United States.

  • Mr. Tom Hicks of US EPA will present "The Energy Star Building Program". This is a well-received overview of how the EPA program evaluates and qualifies buildings as energy efficient; how the rating system works; and an overall introduction and overview of the program.
  • Mr. Mark Jewell, of Energy Efficiency Funding Group, will present the Quikscope software program used to evaluate the economics of energy efficiency upgrades. This program also helps building owners assess how energy savings related to lower operating expenses; higher net operating income; and enhanced building value for commercial property owners.
  • Mr. John DeVillars, Regional Administrator of US EPA, Region One, will present an Energy Star Building Award to the newest qualifying building in New England. The recipient building is a district steam and district chilled water user. This commercial office property is recognized in the marketplace as a leader in energy efficiency and tenant satisfaction.
  • Mr. Robert Thornton, Chairman of the International District Energy Association, will present the Public Sector Leadership Award to Mr. John DeVillars of US EPA for the leadership and support the EPA has provided to IDEA in analyzing district energy as a means to reduce carbon emissions in a climate change policy and in advancing discussion of output-based emissions trading standards.

Monday Afternoon - 3:30-4:30 pm

Customer Panel - District Energy Users Share Their Views

Panelists include:
Mr. Noble Hamaker, Director of Engineering, LaSalle Properties
Mr. Steven Johnson, Property Manager, Hines Interests
Mr. Richard Shea, President, MASCO
Mr. Frank DaVersa, Vice President, Urban Properties (invited)
Moderated by Mr. William Reis, Business Development, The Energy Network

Customers and users of district energy will talk openly and candidly about their experiences. The panelists bring diverse backgrounds in engineering; facility operations; property management and development of commercial office buildings and hospital and university properties. The audience should expect an interesting and informative discussion on how the district energy industry can better serve customer needs; what we do well; where improvements are needed; and what is the landscape for competition.

Hints for Boston

  • We suggest you do not rent a car at the airport. Driving through Boston traffic and navigating The Big Dig construction is extremely challenging, even for native New Englanders. Please take a taxi or shuttle to The Park Plaza Hotel. The Concierge Staff at the hotel will gladly arrange a rental car once you've arrived at the hotel if you want to explore New England or Boston's beautiful countryside.
  • Pack casual clothing, walking shoes and sneakers. Boston is a terrific city to explore on foot. Daytime temperatures in June range generally from mid-70's to mid 80's, but the ocean breeze can cool the evenings.
  • We strongly recommend that you take advantage of the concierge desk at the hotel. The Park Plaza is recognized for its helpful and friendly staff. Boston is busy in June with college commencements and tourists.

Check out our web page at www.districtenergy.org for more tips and hints from a Boston local!!!

Turner's Gift to Support New UN/ECE Project on Energy Efficiency

The United Nations Foundation established by Mr. R.E. Turner to oversee the administration of his gift to the United Nation's approved up to $2 million for the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe's (UN/ECE) proposal on Energy Efficiency Investments for Climate Change Mitigation.

This three-year project will enhance the energy efficiency, infrastructure and capacity of five Eastern European and CIS countries (Belarus, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Russian Federation and Ukraine) which have signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and will provide resources to the project. As part of the UN/ECE supported Energy Efficiency 2000 project, it will focus on specific initiatives in three areas -- municipal lighting, hospitals and district heating. The specific objectives are to develop skills in the private and public sectors; identify, develop, finance and implement energy-efficient projects; improve energy efficiency policies in the five participating countries; and develop the infrastructure and practices of commercial banks and other private sector participants in financing energy efficiency projects.
