Recent advancements in utility scale battery systems has opened up the possibility of integration into combined heat and power facilities that serve microgrids. Batteries now allow for the construction of hybrid CHP plants that can better respond to the variable load of a microgrid. Topics to be covered include; the theory of integration of batteries into the operating dispatch model, the impact on overall project economics of including batteries, impact on emissions from the CHP, electric service contingency analysis, technical challenges associated with the integration; and operational consideration of a hybrid generating system.
