Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Microgrid

07-10-2017 11:52

Summary

Ameresco partnered with the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard to implement an advanced microgrid capable of seamlessly islanding from the grid.  The combined heat and power (CHP) plant, designed, built, operated and maintained by Ameresco, generates 11MWe of power and 510,000lb/hr. of high pressure steam through two combustion turbines with HRSG’s.  The microgrid also includes a 500kW battery energy storage system (BESS) and 4 MWe of emergency backup.  Not only does it provide increased resiliency, it also reduces CO2 and NOx emissions and domestic water usage providing environmental benifits to the Navy.
