District Energy Space 2018 Awards at IDEA2019

Showcasing Industry Growth Around the World

At its 110th Annual Conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the International District Energy Association (IDEA) presented Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards to member organizations in North America and Beyond North America reporting “Most Customer Buildings Committed and/or Connected” and “Greatest Total Customer Building Area Committed and/or Connected” to their district energy systems during calendar year 2018.

North America

In North America, Thermal Energy Corporation (TECO), took home the Gold for both Most Buildings Committed and Greatest Total Customer Building Area Committed, reporting 35 buildings and 19,044,346 Square Feet added to its district energy system in 2018. The TECO central plant and distribution system is celebrating its’ 50th anniversary this year, beginning operation in 1969.

Veolia Boston was awarded the Silver Award for Most Total Buildings Committed, reporting 33 buildings committed. Veolia Baltimore was awarded the Silver Award for Most Total Square Footage Committed, reporting 13,738,152 square feet and the Bronze Award for Most Total Buildings Committed, reporting 28 buildings added. Veolia Philadelphia was awarded the Bronze Award for Most Total Square Footage Committed, reporting 10,236,822 square feet. See below for award photos. 

Beyond North America

Beyond North America, Empower (Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation), based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates won the Gold, for both Most Buildings Committed, reporting 87 buildings added last year, as well as Greatest Total Building Area, reporting 40,341,670 square feet added to their district cooling systems serving multiple areas in Dubai.

Qatar Cool was awarded the Silver Award for both Most Total Buildings Committed and Most Total Square Footage Committed, reporting 44 buildings and 7,141,975 square feet. Emicool was awarded the Bronze Award for both Most Total Buildings Committed and Most Total Square Footage Committed, reporting 24 buildings and 2,282,612 square feet. District Energy Space is an annual publication that compiles customer growth data provided by our member systems, including the number of buildings and their aggregate area in square feet that have been committed or recommitted to district energy service during the previous calendar year. In this year’s edition of District Energy Space, IDEA members collectively reported adding 113,983,484 square feet and 330 buildings to their district energy systems for building heating, cooling, domestic hot water and other end uses. In North America, the reported customer growth during calendar year 2018 amounted to 174 buildings and 64,021,207 square feet. Beyond North America, the reported customer growth during calendar year 2018 amounted to 156 buildings and 49,962,277 square feet. Since the program began in 1990, IDEA members have reported over 2.3 billion square feet of customer space added to district energy systems.

The 110th IDEA Annual Conference and Trade Show, held annually since 1909, brings together global industry experts on resilient microgrids, combined heat & power and sustainable energy technologies for cities, campuses and communities. This year’s four-day event, “The Energy for More Resilient Cities,” was held in the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, PA, and featured compelling technical presentations, panel discussions on industry trends and best practices, workshops and guided tours of operating systems. The sold-out IDEA exhibit hall showcased the newest technologies and equipment in the district energy industry from over 130 manufacturers, suppliers, and technology providers.
