Summary

Dear FAS colleagues,

Please join me in thanking Associate Vice President for Utilities and Energy Management Juan Ontiveros as he retires from the university after more than two decades of service. Juan’s last day with the university will be December 15. He has led the Utilities and Energy Management (UEM) department in various roles since 1997, and has served as AVP since 2014.

Juan currently directs 170 employees and manages a $60 million budget. He is responsible for overseeing maintenance, operation, and improvement of energy production and distribution, as well as managing purchased utilities on the Main Campus and the J. J. Pickle Research Campus. He also oversees maintenance and operation of the 500 elevators and escalators on campus. During Juan’s tenure, UEM has ensured that campus utilities are reliable, efficient, cost-effective and operated safely.

Recognized beyond our university for his leadership and innovation, Juan is a member of the board of directors and a past chair of the International District Energy Association (IDEA). In 2012, he received the IDEA Norm R. Taylor Award for commitment and professional contributions to advancing the district energy system—the type of system that the university has. In 2018, the university’s power system received the IDEA System of the Year Award. Underscoring his commitment to improving power system performance while supporting reliability and sustainability, Juan received the inaugural Robert W. Galvin Award for Performance Excellence in Electricity Renewal (PEER) from the U.S. Green Building Council in 2015. That year, the university also received PEER Certification—the first university to do so. The university was awarded Platinum-level PEER renewal recertification in 2020.

"It’s been an honor to lead this outstanding department and its employees," Juan said. "The UEM team is my legacy. Together we have succeeded in ensuring that campus utilities support the university’s mission. I’m grateful for all UEM staff members and confident they will continue pursuing innovation and sustainability for years to come."

I appreciate Juan’s many contributions to FAS and the university over the years. Please join me in wishing him the best in his retirement.

Regards,

Darrell Bazzell
