Senior Mechanical Engineer - District Utilities


Wiley|Wilson, a 100% employee-owned architecture and engineering firm, is seeking a highly experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer specializing in district utilities. This role can be based in any of our five offices or be fully remote. We are looking for a motivated individual to play a key role in expanding our established district energy portfolio while serving longstanding clients and new partnerships.

Position Overview:
As a Senior Mechanical Engineer specializing in district heating and cooling utilities, you will provide technical leadership in the planning, design, and implementation of district utility projects. You will solve complex engineering challenges, oversee designs, and ensure the reliability of utility systems. This role involves designing central plants, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, and mentoring junior engineers while contributing to efficient solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design of district thermal utility systems, including heating and chilled water and steam.
  • Support business development in the district utility market.
  • Conduct engineering analysis and life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) while troubleshooting design challenges.
  • Collaborate with teams to integrate mechanical systems into infrastructure projects.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance.
  • Assist in field investigations to ensure designs meet client requirements.
  • Participate in design reviews to maintain quality and performance standards.
  • Engage in construction administration.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 10 years of specialized experience with district thermal utility systems, including generation and distribution systems.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Strong leadership and project management skills.
  • Eligibility to work in the U.S. and obtain a security clearance.

Desirable:

·         Master Planning experience

·         Higher Education design experience

·         Federal Government design experience

·         Geothermal design experience

·         LEED accreditation
