As another Phoenix summer stretches into September, the conversation around urban heat tends to circle back to the same question: how does a fast-growing downtown keep getting bigger without every new tower, hotel and lab bolting on its own oversized chiller plant? For 47 buildings across downtown Phoenix, the answer has quietly been a shared, underground system rather than a rooftop-by-rooftop scramble.
Cordia has operated Arizona's largest central business district cooling system since 2001, producing chilled water at a handful of plants and piping it to customers ranging from the Phoenix Convention Center and Chase Field, to the University of Arizona and Arizona State University's downtown campuses. That basic model, one system serving many buildings, has been covered before. What hasn't gotten as much attention is the work happening behind the scenes to make that system use less water and operate more cleanly, even as demand for cooling keeps climbing with the heat.
