Announced last week in Markham, a national “framework” for data centres is encouraging for a Richmond Hill councillor, who is now calling on York Region to assess the effects of each of the area’s planned or completed data facility.
The framework unveiled at the Markham District Energy facility on Warden Avenue was described as “a first step, not the final destination,” but includes a pledge that data facilities “must not shift electricity costs to Canadians” and must create “lasting local benefits” while minimizing water use and environmental impacts.
