Summary

Ireland will conduct a survey to collect geothermal information from deep beneath Dublin city in order to assess the potential of renewable geothermal heat.

The Dublin Seismic Survey project was announced on Thursday by the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment at the European Geothermal District Heating and Cooling Days 2026 conference.

The survey will use non-invasive geophysical technology to image the subsurface up to 3 km below ground. The data will reduce uncertainty for deep geothermal projects across Ireland’s capital and support planned deep geothermal drilling at Grangegorman as part of the separately funded GEMINI demonstration project. The government said the survey results could also be extrapolated to other parts of Ireland and help assess the full potential of geothermal energy to decarbonise heating and cooling.

Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment Darragh O'Brien said Dublin city has some of the highest heat demand in the country and is a prime location for the roll out of district heating networks.
