Presenters

Owen Smith is director of utility and grid solutions at Trane, a leading global provider of building energy management solutions, and a brand of Ingersoll Rand. He leads Trane’s building-to-grid programs, which leverage Trane’s strengths in building equipment, controls, and digital solutions to enable buildings and industrial sites to optimize energy use and act as resources to utilities and grid operators to provide energy, capacity, and ancillary services. This includes a range of offerings to building owners and utilities, including demand response, energy storage, load flexibility solutions, and non-wires alternatives to addressing grid challenges. Prior to joining Trane / Ingersoll Rand in 2015, Smith’s background includes a range of leadership roles at Rocky Mountain Institute and Duke Energy spanning 2002-2015, with significant focus on utility strategy and program implementation related to the full range of distributed energy resources and utility scale clean technologies. Smith holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Wake Forest University and a bachelor’s degree from East Carolina University.

Paul Valenta is Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Trane - CALMAC® Portfolio, a global manufacturer of thermal energy storage products for commercial cooling.  Paul Valenta is a LEED Accredited Professional and is responsible for sales and marketing of ICE BANK® thermal energy storage systems in North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. Paul is a 32-year veteran of the HVAC industry, the last 21 being with CALMAC. He has a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Nebraska and is also a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers.

Joe Riemer is the Product Support and Customer Services Leader – Centrifugal Water-Cooled Chillers at Trane, a leading global provider of building energy management solutions, and a brand of Ingersoll Rand.  He works closely with product planning, product management, engineering, manufacturing, and other groups focused on continuing Trane’s leadership role as the world’s leader for centrifugal water-cooled chillers.  Joe joined Trane in 1996 immediately following graduation from college.  He received his BSME from Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN.  Joe has worked in the HVAC industry at Trane for over 21 years in a variety of roles including customer services for design, energy, and economic software tools, chiller marketing, and order fulfillment within manufacturing and operations.   Joe has been a long time member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers and also currently serves as a board member for the International District Energy Association (IDEA).
