Development and application of building archetype analysis for community energy planning

10-19-2017 14:23

Summary

This presentation will provide an overview of an approach to community scale energy analysis NRCan has adopted involving development and application of modeled building archetype data to estimate thermal and electrical energy demand of buildings. Obtaining detailed building energy data, especially thermal energy data, for community energy research and planning purposes is often difficult and cost prohibitive. The method aims to aid community energy assessment and long term community energy planning while minimizing the amount of data inputs and data collection required at the building level. The work supports planned research on the concept of Smart Energy Networks which requires consideration of all community energy needs and how to best utilize available energy supply resources. The set of standard building archetypes that have been developed by NRCan will be presented along with the type of modeled energy information that is being generated.  Benefits and limitations of this type of approach will be highlighted with case study examples of how the method has been applied for district energy system assessments at the campus and community level.
