Energy Recovery and Utilization for a Mixed-Use Space

Summary

By utilizing hot water and chilled water from a CHP source, as well as energy and mass recovery, this design was able to effectively reduce carbon emissions and EUI while supplying low humidity air to a mixed-use space. The unique demands of a building with a $1.3B construction cost which includes academic spaces, athletic spaces, and housing in a highly urbanized area required an adaptive solution with a close analysis of the energy balance. A desiccant wheel powered by waste heat is optimized to reduce the load on chilled water while minimizing utility costs.
