Michigan Technological University is a State of Michigan Public Research University that was established in 1885 as the Michigan Mining School to train mining engineers for the many copper and iron ore mines located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Over the next 134 years, the University expanded in size and focus, and today is one of the leading STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Universities in the mid-west. Today the University has an enrollment of approximately 7,200 students, including undergraduate and graduate programs, with a large research component.
