Harvard Hosts Record Turnout for IDEA 21st Annual Campus Energy Conference Combined with IDEA Distribution Workshop - February 11-12, 2008

InterContinental Hotel
Boston, Massachusetts

Hosted by Harvard University

Over 450 IDEA members and guests gathered last week in Boston for the 21st IDEA Annual Campus Energy Conference, “Clean Energy, Sustainable Campus” , to exchange solutions for increasing energy efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and operating highly reliable district energy systems.

By all accounts, the conference was highly successful for its trademark collegial exchange of practical and technical information, for developing new business opportunities and for its signature conviviality among attendees. The exhibits were positively abuzz with activity and even the Yankees fans in the group seemed to enjoy the Delegates Dinner at Fenway Park sponsored by Jacobs Carter Burgess.

As conference host, Harvard University provided an enlightening tour of their Cambridge campus with site visits to the renewal projects at the vintage Blackstone Steam Plant, an innovative underground central chiller plant in the newly-constructed Northwest Science Center and an excellent tour of the LEED Platinum renovation of the University Operations Center. IDEA thanks Tom Vautin, Doug Garron, Bob Manning, Susy Bunanta and the entire staff of the Harvard Engineering and Utilities Department for their gracious hospitality and special efforts to provide a highly educational and informative technical tour.

The IDEA Distribution Forum, co chaired by Mark Vogler of Citizens Thermal Energy and Renato Derech of Con Edison Steam, provided a 1.5 day pre-conference workshop with special focus on steam safety and water hammer training taught by Wayne Kirsner of Kirsner Consulting Engineering. With over 140 in attendance, this was the largest Distribution Workshop to date. Participants exchanged insight on steam system mapping; safety procedures and major expansion projects.

Two special pre-conference workshops – How To Manage Campus Carbon Footprint by Jamie Callendar of Baseline Emissions Management and Annika Colston of Blue Source; and Using Campus Physical Plant Assets as a Financial Hedge by Joseph Hoose of Cool Systems, Inc and Mike Webster of ICETEC; were fully subscribed and provided actionable approaches to escalating fuel costs and guidance for new GHG emissions rules.

Johnson Controls received the prestigious Export Achievement Award from the US Department of Commerce and University of New Mexico was awarded the US EPA CHP Energy Star Award. Via a video address, Senator John Kerry commended IDEA members for their commitment to energy efficiency and exhorted industry participants to continue to educate Congress on the value and importance of district energy systems.

International District Cooling Symposium

October 28-30, 2007

JW Marriott Dubai

United Arab Emirates

The members of the IDEA Middle East Chapter want to thank the dozens of presenters and panelists; the generous sponsors; the many exhibitors and over 320 guests and attendees for their active participation in the International District Cooling Symposium held recently in Dubai, UAE. In particular, IDEA wishes to thank our Conference Host, Palm District Cooling, for their excellent support of the conference, welcome dinner and technical tour. Thanks also to Tabreed for supporting the technical tour and graciously hosting a memorable dinner event in Dubailand for all our guests.

From all accounts, the symposium was successful in discussing the opportunities and challenges facing the rapidly growing district cooling industry across the Middle East region. With attendees from 28 different countries, the broad participation and multiple perspectives served to highlight technical and business issues of significant importance. For example, potable water scarcity and electricity capacity are two key areas for engagement for the IDEA Middle East Chapter.

District energy marketing and distribution system professionals gathered at IDEA workshops in Scottsdale, Ariz., in early November to discuss current issues and exchange ideas to better serve their customers. The nearly 50 attendees at the 19th Annual Distribution Workshop and 40 participants at the 18th Marketing Workshop listened to speakers and panelists and offered their own experiences at the 1-1/2-day event.

Attendees at both workshops had the opportunity to hear the results of IDEA’s recent sales and marketing survey. Discussion during the presentation of survey results emphasized the importance of interaction between marketing and distribution professionals in the customer service arena. For more information on workshop presentations, please contact IDEA.

96th Annual IDEA Conference in St. Paul, MN an International Success!

“Think Globally…”The Opening International Session featured district energy industry leaders from seven different countries – Canada, China, France, Sweden, United Arab Emirates, Korea and United States of America – presenting an impressive scale of system growth, increasing market share and forecasts of dramatic expansion. IDEA is proud to offer a global view of the district energy industry through our friends and colleagues around the world.

“…Invest Locally…” - New district energy system developments and expansions are occurring in cities, on campuses and in military bases. The conference featured expert speakers and panelists on development, financing, construction and optimization from across the United States and Canada. Innovation and energy efficiency are prominently on display at IDEA.

“Recycle Energy” – District energy systems can be effective in reducing emissions while reclaiming and reusing valuable thermal energy to heat and cool connected customers. Former EPA Administrator Christine Todd Whitman exhorted IDEA attendees to become more effective advocates for our industry and to spread the good word about the benefits of district energy and CHP.

With over 425 attendees, the 96th Annual Conference and Trade Show offered an opportunity to meet under one roof with some of the world’s best suppliers and manufacturers, consulting firms and financial experts.

IDEA wishes to thank its speakers, presenters, panelist, exhibitors, sponsors, and registrants for helping to make the 96th Annual Conference a terrific success.

“Investing in Infrastructure” - New Record for IDEA Attendance!

The International District Energy Association (IDEA) held its 18th Annual Campus Energy Conference on March 8-11, 2005 at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, DC with over 320 guests, setting a new record for attendance. By all accounts, the Campus Energy Conference was a resounding success.

Conference Technical Chair Bob Smith, Vice President of RMF Engineering, was instrumental in this success. He organized an exceptional technical program with nearly sixty presenters and panelists covering a wide variety of relevant topics over two and one half days. When he originally volunteered in 2003 to chair this conference, Bob said that he felt it could potentially be the biggest and most successful Campus Energy Conference ever. Well, Bob was right. Along with the record turnout for the technical program, attendees were also able to choose from among six (6) different technical tour locations in and around Washington DC.

General Conference Chair John Vucci represented our host university, University of Maryland College Park. After a wonderful theme dinner sponsored by Carter Burgess at the Adele Stamp Student Union, Mr. Vucci and his colleagues provided extensive technical tours of some of the unique and innovative energy systems at the University. Mr. Vucci literally rolled out the red carpet to his IDEA colleagues and was a gracious host throughout our visit to the area.

Based on the enthusiastic buzz in the room and the positive feedback offered below, it was a very successful conference:

“Just wanted to send a letter of thanks and gratitude for the great campus conference…. It was the best of the few I've attended in my limited history, and you should all be commended based on the large number of people that attended…. “ Director of Business Development for Global Technology Company

“The conference was one of best I have ever attended. Your whole staff did a great job & all can be proud of it. Thanks.” Utilities Director from a large midwestern university

“I certainly found the conference to be well organized and full of substantive presentations. Your team did an outstanding job and served as the foundation of a successful conference.”
Principal, National Engineering Firm

A conference of this scope and scale is not possible without the valuable financial support of our sponsors and the many contributions of our Business Partner exhibitors. The generosity of our sponsors makes it possible for all attendees to enjoy a quality conference in a comfortable setting. For that, IDEA thanks and recognizes our sponsors for their help in making the 18th Annual Campus Energy Conference an outstanding meeting.
