District Energy Magazine

District Energy is the magazine of the International District Energy Association and serves as the central information resource for district energy industry professionals. It has been published quarterly since 1915.

District Energy focuses on the technical innovations in the industry, the benefits of urban and institutional district energy systems, as well as the marketing, legal and financial issues involved in developing district energy systems. The magazine provides up-to-date information on trends, how-to recommendations and new product developments.

Articles published in District Energy magazine are drafted on a volunteer basis, with editorial direction provided by an editorial committee.  The editorial calendar for 2008 is available here.

Submitting an Article

A key source of district energy industry information, the magazine is driven by the quality of its articles – most of which are contributed by volunteer authors. Abstracts proposing article ideas are welcome.

Submittals. Although the District Energy editorial calendar is set well in advance, article abstracts may be submitted at any time. If accepted, they may be slated for the next year’s editorial calendar, or even tapped for use during the year submitted on a substitution basis.

Authors wishing to contribute articles should prepare a 150-200 word abstract for review by the District Energy editorial committee. Abstracts should contain an explanation of the unique angle the article will take on its particular subject and should be forwarded to Monica Westerlund, Executive Editor, District Energy, 16303 Blenheim Way, Minnetonka, MN 55345; tel. (952) 935-4904; fax (952) 935-4945; e-mail mlw@westerlund.com.

When an abstract is selected, the author will be asked to prepare and submit an article of a specific length according to detailed instructions that will be provided. At the time of submittal, accompanying visuals should be provided as well, preferably professional photography or graphs, tables and schematics. Cover stories require a vertical color slide, transparency or photograph. Articles are edited to meet the magazine’s stylistic standards; authors receive a final edited draft for approval prior to publication.

Content. The magazine regularly features articles with a unique angle on district energy and/or CHP operations, technology, marketing, industry developments, regulatory issues, legislative action, etc. Articles that are commercial in nature or are solely technical descriptions of district energy systems cannot be accepted. Authors are asked to keep the use of trade names to a minimum, i.e., only as necessary to describe the application of a process. Articles typically range from 1,000 to 1,500 words.

Target Audience. District Energy readers represent utilities, municipalities, universities, hospitals, industrial parks, military bases and other physical plant systems. They also include manufacturers of equipment for central energy plants systems; architects and engineers involved in the design and development of district energy systems; district energy customers such as building owners and managers; and federal, state and community leaders.
