 District Cooling 2.0 - A Climate Solution

9:20 - 9:40

District Cooling contributes to the sustainable development of Dubai through its efficiency and impact on carbon reduction.

Demand side management along with deployment at scale of district cooling is a clear climate solution pathway that is being championed in Dubai and the GCC.

The Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence is playing a leadership role in working closely with objectives of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy (DSCE) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to capture a growing niche market, catering specifically for the transition to a low-carbon and green economy through the consolidation of knowledge and looking to district cooling as an enabler of efficiency and managing the energy water nexus.

Presenter - Pablo Izquierdo Lopez, Dubai Carbon Center of Excellence

9:40 - 10:00

Presentation will focus on the benefits associated with utilizing TSE instead of potable water as make up water in district cooling application. The legislative requirements in Dubai make TSE use mandatory hence the adaptation will proceed. Quality of TSE is very close to the potable water and requires minimum pretreatment. Pretreatment schemes need to be considered as per the size of the application and its financial aspects. Switching make up water supply from potable water to TSE can reduce the potable water bill up to 40% expediting the payback period.

Presenter - Mohammed Abdulaziz Najem Al Awadhi, Dubai Municipality

 Key Issues in System Design

This in-depth session will discuss how the University of Texas at Austin is charged to manage the energy system that produces 100% of the campus energy while keeping fuel at 1976 levels, reduce water consumption, use TSE and TES, recover water from buildings for plant use and is evolving to improve and optimize demand side energy use using real-time building energy models and optimization software to control energy use while the campus is planning to add 4 more million square feet. This session will also introduce an approach to capture water and marketable minerals from Reverse Osmosis reject.

Session Leader - Juan Ontiveros, University of Texas at Austin
