Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s (LBNL) sustainability goals include achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, which will involve moving away from natural gas through campus electrification. LBNL’s supercomputer produces low-grade heat that is typically rejected through mechanical cooling. This study evaluates options for utilizing the low-grade heat as a potential source for distributing thermal energy throughout campus versus a decentralized approach using distributed air-source heat pumps. This presentation will summarize the options and solutions evaluated in consideration of LBNL’s goals.
