Utilizing examples from Europe, where biomass dominates district heating low carbon fuel supply, a community-wide district heating system fueled by a biomass combined heat and power plant was assessed for New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. This provided insights into the low cost of fuel switching district heating systems to biomass. By adding carbon capture and storage to bioenergy (BECCS), district energy generates negative emissions, becoming the centerpiece of Net Zero plans for campuses and communities.
