The University of California Davis California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC) has upgraded their aging steam boiler and chilled water systems with a new, state of the art central utility plant to align the CNPRC campus energy mix with the UC system’s Carbon Neutrality Initiative.
The new central utility plant features a solar thermal collector field tied to a water source heat pump system as the primary means of heating the campus. The output of the solar thermal heat pump system serves the campus buildings via a low temperature, 5th generation, hot water district energy system. Excess solar thermal output during the peak radiation hours is stored in a hot water thermal energy storage tank for later use.
