District Energy/CHP Master Class

The District Energy/CHP Master Class will be a “deeper dive” into strategies, technologies and best practices involved in the operation and optimization of campus-scale thermal energy and electricity production.

This special add-on event will take place Thursday, September 30, from 9am-4pm and will feature breakfast, lunch and tours of the UT Austin district energy/CHP System.

The session will be led by Juan Ontiveros, Associate Vice President of Utilities and Energy Management at UT Austin and former Board Chair of IDEA. The class will cover the methodology UT used to improve the utility system since 1998. It will include management topics such as the organizational approach (organization, training, incentivizing personnel, risk management and teaming with partners).

There will also be a discussion on benchmarking, data and network planning, metering management applications, billing automation and disaster recovery planning.

The session will conclude with how innovation gradually moved the system toward higher efficiency, describe the tools needed to keep performance high, how utility concepts were extended into buildings, current performance and next steps that include optimizing the interdependence of power, cooling, heating and water.

Along with Juan Ontiveros, it will include other Utilities, Energy Management team members, and Industry partners that have and will continue to sustain the CHP & District Energy system performance.

Professional development continuing education units will be available for registrants upon completion.  The Master Class follows the IDEA 2021 Annual Conference and involves a separate registration and fee.

Additional Fee Applies, payable when you register for IDEA2021 or contact IDEA at 508-366-9339 to add on to an existing registration.
