Tour A – 9:10 am – 1:00 pm

Tufts University and Vicinity’s Kendall Station plants

This tour will visit both Tufts University’s cogeneration plant and Vicinity’s Kendall Station with its new electric boiler. At the conclusion of the tour the bus will stop at both the Westin Seaport and Logan International Airport to drop off participants.

Tufts’ Central Energy Plant (CEP) was constructed in 2018. The CEP replaced the 60-year-old heating plant that had previously provided the campus’s heating and cooling. The cogeneration plant now provides power to meet about half of the Medford campus’ needs.

Vicinity’s Kendall Station’s industrial-scale electric boiler will be operational and producing carbon-free eSteam™ for Boston and Cambridge customers.

Tour B – 9:10 am – 1:00 pm

UMass Chan Medical Center

This tour will visit UMass Chan Medical Center’s combined heat and power plant which is about a 50-minute drive west from the Westin. At the conclusion of the tour the bus will stop at both the Westin Seaport and Logan International Airport to drop off participants.

The medical school operates a combined heat and power cogeneration plant that produces the steam and chilled water used by the heating and cooling systems on campus. The plant also generates nearly 90 percent of the electricity used on campus.

Fee to attend tours $75.
