The Biomass Research and Demonstration Facility (BRDF) at the University of British Columbia provides low carbon heat to the hot water campus district energy system. Heat is generated by a cogen engine with heat recovery steam generator and a biomass gasifier. An additional biomass boiler has recently been installed, increasing the total capacity of the plant to 19.5 MWth. This presentation will describe a project to add heat recovery to the plant using condensing economisers coupled with high temperature heat pumps to recover the latent heat in the flue gases which could not be recovered using just the district energy heating return water. The heat recovery system will add over 6 MWth of near zero carbon heating capacity to the plant.
