Valdivia is heavily polluted since its thermal needs are mostly covered by firewood, causing dangerous PM2.5 emissions. However, the firewood market is an important activity of small producers, so CAnDELA project, hosted at the Universidad Austral de Chile's Engineering campus (UACh), looks at transforming them to woodchip producers for a district heating system covering the campus and neighboring buildings' requirements. The project aims to reducing the heating sector emissions, creating local employment, enhancing the circular economy of renewable biomass energy while having academic and research purposes. The proposed technology of generation is CHP, very innovative for the Chilean scenario, where the district energy market is emerging.
