Zibi-A New Zero-Carbon District System in Canada's National Capital

08-16-2023 14:45

Session Abstract

Case study of Zibi, a unique new development of 4,000,000 square feet of residential and commercial buildings in Ottawa, Canada's capital city, that aims One Planet certification. All buildings are connected to a zero-carbon district energy system that recovers waste industrial heat in winter from the neighbor papermill and the adjacent river for heat rejection in summer. The heating network uses low temperature water at 45°C produced by centralized high efficiency heat pumps. The district's central plant was recently commissionned and is operational. Heat recovery data from the papermill will be presented as well as challenges of building and operating a zero carbon energy district.
