Decarbonizing public buildings: a ground- and air-source heat pump project in a sensitive, urban space

08-29-2023 11:32

Session Abstract

As part of the City of Toronto’s progressive Transform TO and Net Zero Strategy, the Comprehensive Energy Retrofit Program, launched in 2018, seeks to decarbonize its public buildings. One of three pilot projects is the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Headquarters, providing police, paramedic and fire services in a fast-growing urban area. This provides a unique case to study the challenges and successes of rolling out a deep decarbonization retrofit program for public buildings. It will also examine the design and implementation of integrating district energy concepts into a single building – including ground- and air-source heat pumps – to achieve deep GHG emission reductions at a reduced cost.
