Data Center Cooling As A Primary Heat Source In Campus Hydronic District Heating Systems

09-13-2023 13:48

Session Abstract

A primary focus for university campuses is to decarbonize their heating systems. As a part of this, they are working on incrementally changing out their old fossil fuel based high-temperature steam and hot water heating systems with lower temperature hot water utilizing heat pumps. The heat pump challenge is to utilize a higher temperature and consistent capacity heat source which enables baseloading, maximizes efficiency and minimizes cost. Data center cooling systems fits all of these requirements. The cooling temperatures of data centers continue to increase, further increasing heat efficiency as the cooling is directed closer to the CPUs where it's needed and with recognition that traditional cooling temperatures are not required.
