Building Electrification is seen as a viable and cost-effective means to achieve short-term GHG targets. Many cities are encouraging Building Electrification and even banning Natural Gas. This shift over the next 10 years is both a threat and an opportunity for District Energy. Thermal networks may be considered redundant in this future; however, there are opportunities for DE to enable electrification while providing ancillary benefits. Examples of projects in development and operation will be used to demonstrate how DE can adapt and even thrive in this new reality. Technologies including heat pumps, electric boilers and thermal storage will be explored, as well as energy sources such as sewer, geo-exchange and data centre heat recovery.
