In 2019 the leadership at the University of Virginia adopted two audacious sustainability goals. Carbon neutral by 2030 and fossil fuel free by 2050. Based on the results of an in-depth engineering study, this presentation will review the strategies and projects being considered to meet these goals. The five elements of the decarbonization strategy are building efficiency, building engagement, plant infrastructure, seasonal storage, and offsets/RECs. The projects to be implemented by 2030 include goexchange, coal conversion, heat recovery chillers, building engagement, extension of thermal utilities, and steam alternatives.
