Conducting geological investigation as part of planning for a large geothermal (ground source) heat pump system is often overlooked or considered unnecessary. However, unexpected subsurface conditions may exist that provide opportunities for optimized ground heat exchanger design. The author will present on two case studies where site conditions revealed during up-front subsurface investigations resulted in innovative and custom system designs, Cornell University’s NYCTech Campus, Roosevelt Island, NYC, and the Ross School, East Hampton, Long Island, NY.
