Ultra-Low Temperature Heating for Ultra-High COP, Ultra-Low Carbon Heating

Session Abstract

The key to reducing carbon emissions is not always the technology, but often how quickly the technology can be deployed and the resulting impact over time.  District cooling grids can be leveraged to compliment existing heating grids in winter months to recover significant untapped community waste heat sources through direct capture and reuse of low-grade heat in outdoor air preheat without the use of a heat pump.  Expanding on this approach, the pilot Ultra-Low Temperature Heating is a novel approach that is demonstrating deep decarbonization of heating a legacy laboratory facility on the University of Minnesota’s Twin Cities campus.  A review of the pilot program, two hydronic approaches, the resulting data, and lessons learned are shared
