Developing a Regional-Scale District Energy System using Waste-to-Energy Heat

08-16-2023 15:53

Session Abstract

We will present learnings from a recently-negotiated contract between Metro Vancouver and River District Energy to supply 10 MW of heat from an existing waste-to-energy facility to a district heating system. This project illustrates the opportunities and challenges with building regional-scale district energy infrastructure. Key issues include sharing the benefits and risks from pursuing a large project; coordinating infrastructure and customers across multiple cities; preserving options for growth; and allocating GHG benefits.
