Following Caltech’s Utility Master Plan (2018), this feasibility case study aims to eliminate fossil fuel combustion for heating and proposes converting 72 buildings from steam heat to hot water fed from a new Combined Heating and Cooling Plant. This case study involved on-site surveys combined with energy and financial modeling to evaluate the transition and planning for modernization of campus heating infrastructure, including replacement of steam pipe distribution within existing tunnels.
