Cornell's Lake Source Cooling: 21 years of cost, energy and greenhouse gas reductions

09-19-2023 12:11

Session Abstract

In 1990, Cornell University faced the choice of purchasing new chillers for its chilled water system or direct use of the cool water in Cayuga Lake. This presentation will supplement the IDEA magazine article (winter 2022) that reviews the economic performance of Lake Source Cooling relative to the chiller base case.  In addition, we will present the avoided greenhouse gas emissions from Lake Source Cooling, and evaluate alternative methods of carbon accounting that yield significantly different outcomes.
