Universities can use their district energy systems to advance their institution’s carbon reduction goals. Our work has demonstrated a number of approaches to leverage campus (district) energy systems to develop decarbonization roadmaps: solar PV at Cornell University, biomass for steam production at the University of Idaho and University of Iowa, energy efficiency projects at Idaho, Fresno State, and Georgetown University, and conversion of steam heating to hot water heating, leveraging ground and air source heat pumps, for multiple systems. This paper will discuss these specific efforts and show how they can be combined to create a cost-effective decarbonization roadmap.
