Procuring the major equipment for a district energy central plant can be one of the most difficult tasks in the construction industry. The complexity and cost of the equipment, combined with the fact that the equipment is expected to serve for 30 or more years, put weight on every decision. Pure low bid procurement is often a poor solution, but sole sourcing equipment can increase costs and violate campus policy. This presentation features two case studies, with two universities procuring the same type of equipment within three months of each other. The successes of each process and the lessons learned will be discussed. The presentation will show how small differences in the bidding and selection process greatly influenced the results.
