A Campus’s Central Utilities Plant (CUP) often contains critical campus loads and having a reliable Emergency Black Start Generating (BSG) system is typically a necessity in the event of an extended utility outage. This is especially true for campuses like the University of Rochester (UofR) where the CUP is responsible for supplying utilities to various hospitals & medical centers on campus. This presentation will examine the re-design of UofR’s existing CUP distribution & BSG system and will go over the need for re-design, the various options considered and how the new design is being implemented while maintaining UofR’s plant reliability during all project phases.
