Tripling the Sewage Heat Recovery Capacity in Vancouver’s False Creek Energy Centre

08-29-2023 11:47

Session Abstract

In 2010, the City of Vancouver was a precursor in North America when it introduced large-scale sewage heat recovery to generate low carbon heat for the False Creek Neighbourhood Energy Utility (NEU).  At the time, provisions were made within the plant and the system for future expansion of the sewage heat recovery system, which is now underway.  The City and their engineering consultant, KWL, will present the work done to date to bring this expansion to reality, including the funding and procurement strategy, the preliminary analytical work, the challenges encountered, the constraints when working with sewage, the changes made to the original plan, and the resulting design.
