Joan Kowal, Emory University

Biography

Joan is the Senior Director of Energy Strategy and Utilities, a position within Facilities Management created to more closely align the design, operations and maintenance of all utilities for the campus while improving energy and water use efficiency.  Joan joined Emory in 2013, and was previously the Energy Manager at the University of Maryland, College Park, as well as the Energy Advisor for the entire University System of Maryland.  Joan was the 2012 recipient of the Maryland Clean Energy Center’s “Clean Energy Champion” award and received Emory’s Award of Distinction in 2017 for her group’s energy reduction efforts.  She is a Mechanical Engineer from Bucknell University, a Certified Energy Manager and received her Professional Engineers License from the State of Georgia.
