Garlock Sealing Technologies is a world leader in the manufacturing of seals and gaskets. They implemented a lake water cooling project that helped shed chilled water load at their manufacturing campus. It utilized an existing lake water feed to campus from Canandaigua Lake. Prior, most of the lake water went unused and was sent to a retention pond. Garlock invested in a heat exchange system using geothermal energy of the water to cool the largest process cooling load. The temperatures from the lake are low enough year-round to provide the required cooling. Garlock also replaced aging chillers; because of the load reduction, the new chillers were able to be sized substantially smaller along with other energy-efficiency measures.
