California's mild climate coupled with its aggressive climate action plans and de-carbonization goals necessitate the need for rapid renewal of outdated district energy systems. An existing steam distribution system feeding campus buildings will be converted to a 160F LTHW district heating network with heat recovery to attain UC’s carbon neutrality goals by 2025. The presentation reviews the evaluation process for modernizing the distribution to utilize a pipe material suited to dodge existing utilities and accommodate a diverse range of operating temperatures while being easy to procure and install. The new LTHW pipe will deactivate roughly 14 miles of steam lines and will nearly eliminate natural gas burden from the central plant.
