The need to reduce GHG emissions is causing building owners to evaluate district energy options for grid-connected systems. Because the carbon intensity of grid electricity varies significantly, the GHG reduction of these options is also highly variable. This session highlighted regional variations in grid electricity and the future projections for grid decarbonization. It drew on WSP’s experience to discuss how the long-term GHG reduction potential of energy strategies should be evaluated using projects in California and Colorado as case studies.
