Industrial sensors promise valuable insights to reduce downtime, environmental harm and overall costs, but batteries present a fundamental barrier to impactful internet of things (IoT) deployments. Inevitable battery maintenance not only restricts the scale at which facilities are willing to scatter wireless sensors, but for the sensors that are deployed, also shrinks the potential ROI from those investments as plant operators effectively trade one maintenance event for another. To achieve the true potential of the industrial internet of things (IIoT), sensors must overcome the battery issue. Energy harvesting may be the key to overcoming this obstacle.
