The Bronx Zoo is located within Bronx Park, in New York City. It is one of the largest zoos in the United States. The project involves a major upgrade of the Zoo’s CHP heat recovery equipment, hydronic distribution system, and building heat exchangers and controls. The Zoo’s hydronic system, an uncommon arrangement using a single-pipe loop, created challenges for the design team. The combined effect of the planned upgrades is expected to yield significant energy saving and increase waste heat recovery. The project challenges were compounded by the zoo’s environment of high pedestrian traffic, active exhibits, and animal habitats.
