Tapping into Wastewater Thermal Energy at the National Western Center in Denver

07-01-2019 09:33

Denver’s National Western Center (NWC) has been home to the iconic National Western Stock Show for over 110 years and is undergoing a $1 billion redevelopment and modernization to make it a vibrant and accessible educational and entertainment hub in the heart of Denver, Colorado, that will attract over two million visitors annually. The City and County of Denver has selected EAS Energy Partners to bring a campus-wide approach to energy at the 250-acre site that leverages unique energy sources. A partnership with the Metropolitan Wastewater Reclamation District enables the project to tap into a major sanitary sewer line to access thermal energy and develop a state-of-the-art sewer heat recovery system. The team is also reviewing and analyzing other technologies including a microgrid, solar energy, and battery storage to not only provide clean energy, but also redundancy and islanding capabilities. This is important to the campus not only because of the large events the NWC will hold but also to support Colorado State University labs and clinics and a broader mission of community and regional resiliency. This project will collaborate with the neighboring communities and help educate people on the importance of renewable, low carbon energy sources. While this project is still in the development phase, the team will discuss lessons learned to-date and the exciting plans moving forward.
