Power management company Eaton hosted the Pennsylvania Resiliency through Microgrid Summit last month in Pittsburgh. The event focused on how microgrids can provide a customized approach to support community or organizational energy needs for more resilient, sustainable and affordable power.
The summit brought together civil, industry and business leaders – including Robert Thornton, IDEA, President & CEO. With rich natural gas resources, renewable energy options, innovative manufacturers focused on driving microgrid innovation and an intelligent energy approach, Pennsylvania is leading energy innovation and policy.
The event at Eaton addressed the role of microgrids in supporting community and business energy needs and covered:
- Why microgrids are being implemented
- How Pennsylvania-based technology leaders are supporting microgrids
- Funding and ownership structures enabling the development of microgrids
- Government perspective on energy policy and incentives

The event on September 19 was hosted at Eaton’s Experience Center in Pittsburgh, which includes a full-scale operational microgrid powering the lighting, HVAC and facility loads. The microgrid is used to intelligently manage multiple sources, including solar, energy storage, generation and the utility supply to ensure power continuity for short and long-term utility interruptions.
